This course is designed to teach students the fundamental practical skills to navigate and work in a z/OS environment. This includes the use of ISPF/PDF dialogs, TSO/E commands, JCL, UNIX Shell, and BookManager.

This class consists of a mixture of theoretical and practical sections.  The major objective of the course is to familiarize the students with the everyday activities involved in working in a z/OS environment.  Therefore the main focus in the  the course is on the lab exercises.

Audience

 

The audience for this class is IT personnel with a theoretical background of OS/390 and z/OS (for example, as taught in zSeries Mainframe Environment: A technical Overview of the H/W & S/W Evolution (ES820CE) and some general practical IS experience.

 

 

Skills taught

 

- Identify the main concepts of a z/OS or OS/390 operating system

- Understand the basic S/390 hardware to support a z/OS or OS/390 operating system

- Describe the purpose of the Job Entry Subsystem (JES)

- Log-on to TSO and initialize ISPF/PDF

- Describe and use selected basic TSO/E commands

- Navigate ISPF/PDF dialogs and use options such as View, Edit, and Utilities

- Explain the basic rules for coding JCL and for submitting a batch job

- Perform basic data set functions such as create, copy, and delete

- Use in-stream procedures and cataloged procedures

- Execute commonly used JCL utilities

PREREQUISITES:

 

You should be able to understand basic data processing concepts ; understand software concepts ; describe and use S/390 computer hardware and information system technologies. These skills can be aquired through on the job training or by attending (ES050CE) - An Introduction to the z/OS Environment

Some familiarity with large systems from either attending the zSeries Mainframe Environment: A technical Overview of the H/W & S/W Evolution (ES820CE) or  equivalent on-the-job training and experience.
