| This classroom course of 4 days discusses catalog management and availability issues of Integrated Catalog Facility (ICF) catalogs in the z/OS and OS/390 environments. Parallel sysplex considerations are examined, and the influence of the Storage Management Subsystem (SMS) on catalogs is discussed. A comparison of catalog caching techniques is analyzed. The course compares the efficiency of two catalog sharing modes: VSAM Volume Data Set (VVDS) Mode and Enhanced Catalog Sharing (ECS) Mode. Operational examples using a number of IDCAMS commands, such as REPRO, EXPORT, IMPORT, EXPORT DISCONNECT, IMPORT CONNECT, and ALTER are provided and discussed. The course addresses the structures (catalog, VVDS, and VTOC) involved in the ICF environment. Emphasis is placed on systematic error diagnosis, recovery, and backup procedures. Sizing and performance considerations are also introduced. | View this course in other countries | | Training Paths referencing this course are: | Training paths | | Audience | | z/OS and OS/390 systems programmers who are responsible for the management, error diagnosis, and recovery of ICF catalogs. | | Skills taught | | After completing this course, you should be able to: - Work with VSAM and SMS-managed data sets in a sysplex environment
